Week 32 – National Allotment Week 9-13 August 21

I love the smell of blackcurrants. The only thing better than fresh blackcurrants is blackcurrant jam!

I can advise you on setting up your grow-your-own adventure – from a full allotment, to just a few pots on the balcony – get off to a great start with a 1 hour consult with KCGD.

Despite the slightly terrifying botanical name, cauliflower is tasty and good for you – a bit tricky to grow, but that’s the fun bit! The thing to remember is that whatever happens, there’s always next year – and you’ll be a year wiser!

Why not take advantage of my hard-won expertise? I can give you an hour’s advice in your own plot, set you up with a rotation plan, or show you how to avoid carrot-root fly. Just give me a call on 07940219660 or drop me an email kate@katecharlesgardendesign.co.uk

Not everyone has the space for a tree, but if you do, then a plum is one of the best to grow, with attractive blossom and juicy fruits – what’s not to like?

Sweetcorn is amazingly easy to grow. Sow the seeds in loo roll tubes and keep them well watered until the corn is the size of a pencil, then plant out.

My advice is grow what you like to eat, then narrow that down by what’s easy – if you’re a beginner (carrots, beetroot, chillies) and what’s fun (any type of squash – courgette, pumpkin etc.).

Everyone’s favourite….surely? Even if you don’t have a greenhouse, delay planting out by just a little, and your tomato plants will be fine! Last year I grew so many outside that I was giving them away – even after I’d made passata.
