6 ways to update your garden once the children have grown up

If the new school year has started you thinking about a garden without children in it –even if you’re not quite there yet, read on for some tips and ideas about how to reclaim your precious outdoor space –just for you (and maybe the occasional grandchild –eventually).

1. Reduce the lawn size -mowing the lawn can be a chore. Take this opportunity to improve the grass, add edging or mowing strips, and make the shape more interesting.

2. Fill in the borders. Now you don't have to worry about footballs trashing the plants, you can add in more delicate and colourful specimens.

3. Add in more adult spaces -if you've always wanted a garden bar or extra seating area to take your morning coffee, this is the perfect upgrade.

4. Add a water feature. If you've been worried about safety, impromptu dipping, or water splashed all through the house, now you can install that sophisticated and elegant blade or bubble fountain.

5. Buy new garden furniture -now that it won't have juice spilled over it, you can splash out on some comfy recliners -perfect for enjoying the peace and quiet!

6. Remove climbing frames, trampolines and other toys -even if you're hoping for grandchildren, you'll want to buy safer and up to date play equipment when they come along. In the meantime, enjoy your adult space!
